Thomas Hall was born in England in 1794, and immigrated to Philadelphia with his family as a child. He apprenticed to John Lowe and became his successor in 1813. In 1818, he relocated to New York after his shop was destroyed by fire. In 1824, he formed a partnership with Henry Erben known as Hall & Erben (Firm), and in 1827 became the shop foreman when Erben took over as the proprietor of the firm.
